The coccidia genus Aggregata is responsible for intestinal coccidiosis in wild and cultivated cephalopods. Two coccidia species, Aggregata octopiana, (infecting the common octopus Octopus vulgaris), and A. eberthi, (infecting the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis), are identified in European waters. Exte …
Molecular phylogenetic analysis of the coccidian cephalopod parasites Aggregata octopiana and Aggregata eberthi (Apicomplexa: Aggregatidae) from the NE Atlantic coast using 18S rRNA sequences. By Camino Gestal.
The cephalopod Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1789 is the definitive host for the species Aggregata octopiana Schneider, 1875 (Estevez et al. 1996). This paper pre-sents the first report of the prawn ...
Aggregata octopiana (Apicomplexa, Aggregatidae) is the most prevalent coccidian in the wild common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), whose heteroxenous life cycle includes gamogony and sporogony undergoing in the octopus digestive tract. In the infected reared octopi, we observed an unusual extraintestinal distribution of the coccidian, with both ...

reviewed the Aggregata species parasitic in Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 from NE Atlantic waters. They found that Aggregata octopiana (Schneider, 1875) Frenzel, 1885, is the only valid species parasitic in the common octopus. After studying the definitive and intermediate hosts in wild populations and carrying out experimental
Jul 15, 2021· Aggregata polibraxiona n. sp. first Apicomplexa described from a cephalopod in Mexico.. A. polibraxiona n. sp. is the first Apicomplexa described from Octopus bimaculatus.. Morphological description shows cylindrical projections on the sporocyst wall. • Molecular characterization shows A. polibraxiona n. sp. close to A. octopiana.
Abstract Health of wild and reared Octopus vulgaris is threatened by the most dangerous parasite for the octopus, the protozoan coccidia Aggregata octopiana. This host-parasite relationship was studied to analyze the effect of A. octopiana on the cellular immune parameters of O. vulgaris. A. octopiana sporocysts infecting the digestive tract of octopuses were counted in order to confirm two ...
Aug 01, 2002· Octopus vulgaris infected with Aggregata octopiana were collected from an open-water culture system in the Ría of Aldán (NW Spain). Digestive tract infection values were determined with the use of a Neu chamber by counting the number of A. octopiana sporocysts.

Based on immunological methods, the prawn Palaemon elegans apparently acts as the natural intermediate host for Aggregata octopiana, a coccidian that infects the cephalopod Octopus vulgaris. However, cross-reactivity with another coccidian, A. eberthi, was present in both sporogonic and merogonic stages.

To address this issue, we sequenced the nuclear SSU rRNA genes from the homoxenous apicomplexan parasites of insects Adelina grylli and Adelina dimidiata, and the heteroxenous Aggregata octopiana and Aggregata eberthii that are transmitted between cephalopods and crustaceans, and used them for phylogenetic reconstructions.
Aggregata octopiana, with fully documented sporogonic development, and a report of Dicyema acuticephalum in the renal tubules of Octopus vulgaris from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea (southern Catalonia). Prevalence for the A. octopiana infection of the intestinal epithelium was (8/8), while prevalence of D. acuticephalum was ~12.5 % (1/8).
The parasite most frequently found in octopus digestive tract is Aggregata octopiana (Estévez et al., 1996; Castellanos-Martínez and Gestal, 2013), a microscopic Coccidian, spore-forming, single ...

ABSTRACT: Octopus vulgaris infected with Aggregata octopiana were collected from an open-water culture system in the Ría of Aldán (NW Spain). Digestive tract infection values were determined with the use of a Neu chamber by counting the number of A. octopiana sporocysts. Two coccidia species, Aggregata octopiana, (infecting the common octopus Octopus vulgaris), and A. eberthi, (infecting the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis), are identified in European waters.Extensive investigation of their morphology resulted in a redescription of A. octopiana in octopuses ...
Prevalence and distribution of the coccidian parasite Aggregata octopiana (Protozoa: Apicomplexa) in common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) in the Mediterranean Spanish coasts were studied. A total of 114 octopuses were sampled from 30 geographic sectors by trawl fleet, and whitish macroscopic oocysts typical of A. octopiana infection were recorded in 96% of octopuses in the digestive tract and ...
